Why Does My Hot Water Run Out So Fast?

Why hot water runs out so fast: sediment in the tank, a broken dip tube, an undersized heater, and when a tankless unit is the better fix.

If the shower goes cold halfway through, the heater is usually still working. It is just delivering less hot water than it used to, or less than the house needs. In South Florida the cause is often sediment, a broken dip tube, or a tank that was always too small. A tankless unit is one answer. It is not the first thing to try.

Why does my hot water run out so fast?

A tank holds a fixed amount of heated water. When that water is gone, you get whatever is coming in from the street until the burner or elements catch up. Hot water runs out faster than it should for four reasons:

  • Sediment has filled the bottom of the tank, so the heater holds less water.
  • The dip tube is broken, and cold water mixes at the top instead of entering at the bottom.
  • The tank is too small for the showers, dishwasher, and washer running together.
  • A thermostat or element is weak, so the tank never actually reaches the temperature you set.

Is sediment the reason I run out of hot water?

Often, yes. Palm Beach and Martin County water is hard. Minerals settle in the bottom of the tank, the burner heats that pile of sand instead of water, and the usable gallons shrink. Rumbling or popping from the heater is the usual sound.

A yearly flush slows this down. Once the sediment has hardened, a flush may not recover the lost capacity, and a leaking or rusted tank should be replaced rather than flushed harder. Our repair or replace guide covers that decision.

What is a dip tube, and can it make hot water run out?

The dip tube is a plastic pipe inside the tank that sends incoming cold water to the bottom, so it does not mix with the hot water at the top. When the tube cracks, cold water dumps in at the top and you run out of hot water in a few minutes even though the tank is full. Replacing a dip tube is a repair, not a new heater, if the tank itself is sound.

Is my water heater too small?

A household that runs two showers and a dishwasher will empty a 40-gallon tank. That is normal, not a failure. Signs the tank is simply undersized:

  • Hot water was always short in this house, even when the heater was new.
  • The problem shows up only when two fixtures run at once.
  • The heater is quiet, holds temperature, and is not leaking.

The fix is a larger tank or a tankless water heater, which heats water as you use it. Installed prices for tankless units are in our 2026 cost guide. A tankless unit still needs yearly descaling in Florida hard water.

What should I check before I call?

  • Set the thermostat near 120 degrees. Higher is not more capacity, and it raises scald risk.
  • See whether one fixture or the whole house runs out. One fixture can be a mixing valve or a cartridge, not the heater.
  • Listen for popping. That points to sediment.
  • Note the age. A tank past about 10 years that is also running out is often near the end.

If the tank is leaking, shut it down and call. We repair and replace tank and tankless heaters across Jupiter, Palm Beach Gardens, and Stuart. Phones are answered 7 days a week. Service calls are Monday through Friday, 7 AM to 6 PM.

Get the hot water back

Sediment and a broken dip tube are repairs. A tank that was always too small is a sizing decision, and tankless is one of the options. People's Choice Plumbing will tell you which one it is before any work starts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my hot water run out so fast?

The usual causes are sediment filling the tank, a broken dip tube that mixes cold water at the top, a tank that is too small for the household, or a weak element or thermostat. A leak or a tank older than about 10 years often means replacement.

Can sediment make a water heater run out of hot water?

Yes. Hard water in Palm Beach and Martin County settles in the bottom of the tank and takes up space, so you have fewer gallons of hot water. Popping or rumbling is a common sign. A yearly flush helps if the sediment has not hardened.

What is a dip tube on a water heater?

It is the pipe that carries incoming cold water to the bottom of the tank. If it breaks, cold water mixes with the hot water at the top and the shower goes cold in minutes. Replacing the tube is a repair when the tank is otherwise sound.

Is a 40-gallon water heater too small?

For one or two people it is often enough. Two showers plus a dishwasher will empty it. If the shortage started the day the heater was installed, the tank is undersized. If it used to last and now does not, look at sediment or the dip tube first.

Will a tankless water heater stop me running out of hot water?

A properly sized tankless unit heats water as you use it, so the tank cannot run empty. It costs more up front and needs yearly descaling in Florida. It is the right move when the tank is too small or due for replacement, not when a dip tube or a flush would fix a sound tank.

When should I call a plumber about hot water running out?

Call when a flush does not help, the heater is popping, the tank is leaking, or you are out of hot water in one shower. We diagnose sediment, dip tubes, elements, and sizing during weekday service hours.
